Product Story
Vintage Handwoven Raffia Textile (Democratic Republic of Congo, mid-20th century)
Framed size: 30 x 37 in
This one-of-a-kind vintage Kuba cloth is defined by a striking maze-like composition - a dense field of irregular geometric forms rendered in natural raffia and dyed fibers. The pattern is bold yet improvisational, with asymmetries and variations that pulse with quiet rhythm.
Made in the mid-20th century by the Kuba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, these textiles are a collaborative expression of cultural memory: men weaving the base, women embellishing the surface. Once used in ceremonies and rites of passage, they now stand as testaments to a centuries-old tradition of abstraction and design.
Framed in walnut veneer with gallery-grade glass and an oversized mat that exposes the full raw edges of the textile, this 30 x 37 inch work has been preserved as a true piece of art. It has been carefully mounted to hang either vertically or horizontally — allowing you to decide how the piece moves in your space.
