worth seeing this week
Daiyo - Warosoku Candles from Shiga Prefecture
Made in a workshop founded in 1914 near Lake Biwa, Japan. The candles are hand-formed from sumac wax, a plant-based material derived from the haze tree, used in Japanese candle-making for centuries. Lit, the flame is taller and brighter than paraffin. Unlit, the wax has a warmth and texture you want to hold. Worth seeing with the cast iron Koma stand beside it.
Come say hi
Tanya is in the store most days. She chose every object here, knows where it came from, who made it, why it's worth keeping. If you have questions, or you just want to talk through what you're looking for, that's not an interruption.
Hillery Sproatt Woven Blankets
A painter who makes blankets. Hillery Sproatt's landscapes and creatures start as fine art and become textiles — produced at a family-owned mill in the USA from 80% recycled cotton. The Jungle Ochre and Monks Moss are both in-store this week. The weight and hand-feel of these is the whole point. They don't photograph the way they live.
